Detailed Transport Guide#
By Flight
The fastest and often cheapest option if booked in advance. Multiple daily flights from KLIA and KLIA2 to Penang International Airport.
By Bus
Comfortable express buses depart frequently from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Sungai Nibong or Butterworth.
By Train (ETS)
The ETS (Electric Train Service) offers a scenic, comfortable journey. Departs from KL Sentral to Butterworth.
By Car
Driving offers flexibility for stops along the way. Take the North-South Expressway (PLUS) from KL.
Pricing Comparison#
All prices are approximate and based on my experience booking these routes multiple times. Prices fluctuate by season and how far ahead you book.
Getting from Penang Airport to George Town#
I always tell visitors not to worry about the airport transfer — it's straightforward. Penang International Airport is about 16 km south of George Town, and you have three solid options.
Grab (Ride-hailing)
RecommendedRM 35-50
30-40 minutes to George Town
Open the Grab app as soon as you land. Pickup is at the arrivals curb. Prices surge slightly during peak hours (5-7 PM). I find this the most convenient option by far.
Rapid Penang Bus 401E
RM 4
45-60 minutes to Komtar
The cheapest option. Bus 401E runs from the airport to Komtar (city center) every 30-60 minutes from 5:30 AM to 11 PM. You'll need exact change or a Mutiara Pass.
Airport Taxi
RM 45-60
30-40 minutes to George Town
Purchase a fixed-price taxi coupon at the counter inside arrivals. Slightly more expensive than Grab but guaranteed availability. Useful if your phone has no data yet.
Journey Tips#
What to pack for the bus
Bring a light jacket or hoodie — Malaysian buses crank the air conditioning to arctic levels. I've been caught shivering in shorts more than once. Noise-cancelling earbuds and a neck pillow make a big difference on the 4-5 hour ride.
Snacks and food for the train
The ETS train has no food service car, so stock up at KL Sentral before boarding. I usually grab nasi lemak bungkus from one of the stalls or a few curry puffs from Old Chang Kee. Bring water too — the journey is long and the air is dry.
Which airport terminal for each airline
AirAsia flies from KLIA2 (the low-cost terminal). Malaysia Airlines and Firefly depart from KLIA (main terminal). The two terminals are connected by the KLIA Ekspres train (3 minutes, free between terminals). Double-check your terminal the night before.
Butterworth ferry connection
If you arrive by train or bus at Butterworth, the ferry to George Town is just a short walk from the station. Ferries run every 15-20 minutes and cost RM 1.20 (free from Penang to Butterworth). The crossing takes about 15 minutes and the views of George Town's skyline are beautiful.
Best time to travel
Leave KL in the morning if taking the bus or train — you'll arrive in Penang by afternoon and still have time for a hawker dinner. For flights, mid-week departures (Tue-Thu) are usually 20-30% cheaper than weekend flights.
Frequently Asked Questions#
What is the cheapest way to get from KL to Penang?
The cheapest option is the express bus from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan), starting from RM 35 one way. AirAsia flights can sometimes match this price during sales if booked well in advance, but the standard bus fare is consistently the lowest.
How long does the ETS train from KL to Penang take?
The ETS from KL Sentral to Butterworth takes approximately 4 to 5 hours depending on the service class. ETS Gold is slightly faster. From Butterworth, you'll need a short 15-minute ferry ride to reach Penang Island.
Can I drive from KL to Penang in one day?
Yes, driving takes about 3.5 to 4 hours via the North-South Expressway. Tolls cost approximately RM 75 one way, and fuel will be around RM 80-100. Many travelers stop in Ipoh (roughly halfway) for a meal break.
Is it better to fly or take the bus from KL to Penang?
Flying is generally better for most travelers. Flight time is about 1 hour, and fares start from RM 80 when booked early. The bus takes 4-5 hours but costs RM 35-60. If you value time, fly. If you're on a tight budget, take the bus.
Do I need to book ETS train tickets in advance?
Yes, ETS tickets frequently sell out, especially on weekends and public holidays. Book on the KTMB website at least 3-5 days ahead. Tickets open 60 days before departure.
Our Recommendation#
For most travelers, flying is the smartest option. It's often the cheapest when booked in advance, and saves half a day of travel time. If you enjoy the journey, take the ETS train for scenic views and the Butterworth ferry experience.
