PenangCameron Highlands

From sea-level street food to misty tea plantations at 1,500 meters. The Cameron Highlands is one of the most rewarding side trips from Penang — but plan to stay at least one night.

Detailed Transport Guide#

🚌

By Bus

Direct buses run from Sungai Nibong terminal to Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands. The first half is flat highway; the second half is winding mountain roads that climb from sea level to 1,500 meters. If you're prone to motion sickness, sit at the front and take a pill before boarding.

Duration:4-5 hours
Departure:Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, Penang
Arrival:Tanah Rata Bus Station
Operators:Unititi Express, CS Travel
Tip: There are only 1-2 direct buses daily (usually morning departures). Book on Easybook at least 2 days ahead. If no direct bus, go Penang → Ipoh → Tapah → Cameron Highlands, but it's a hassle.
🚗

By Car / Rental

The most practical option if you're comfortable with mountain driving. The route goes Penang Bridge → North-South Expressway → exit at Tapah → climb via Route 59 to Cameron Highlands. The mountain section is about 90 minutes of switchbacks, but the road is well-maintained.

Duration:3.5-4 hours
Toll:~RM 30-35 one way
Fuel:~RM 30-45
Route:Penang → Ipoh → Tapah → Cameron Highlands
Tip: Rent a car from Penang Airport (RM 100-150/day). Drive in daylight — the mountain roads have no street lights and fog rolls in after dark. A Myvi or Axia handles the roads fine; no need for an SUV.

Day Tour (Not Recommended)

Some operators offer day tours with hotel pickup in Penang. You'll spend 7-8 hours in a van and maybe 4-5 hours actually in Cameron Highlands. I've done this once and wouldn't recommend it — you arrive exhausted and barely scratch the surface.

Duration:12-14 hours (full day)
Pickup:Hotel in George Town, usually 6-7 AM
Includes:Transport, some entrance fees, lunch
Return:Usually back by 8-9 PM
Tip: If you only have one day and really must go, book through your hotel or on Klook. But honestly, you're better off going to Ipoh for a day trip and saving Cameron Highlands for an overnight.

The Route: What to Expect#

I've driven this route three times now, and it never gets old. Here's the breakdown so you know what you're in for.

Stage 1: Penang to Ipoh (2 hours)

Flat highway driving on the North-South Expressway. Cross the Penang Bridge and head south. This stretch is easy and fast. I usually stop in Ipoh for white coffee and bean sprout chicken — a perfect mid-trip break.

Stage 2: Ipoh to Tapah (45 minutes)

Continue south on the highway past Ipoh to the Tapah exit. This is the last stretch of flat road. Fill up on fuel here — there are petrol stations at the Tapah junction. Stock up on snacks too.

Stage 3: Tapah to Cameron Highlands (1-1.5 hours)

This is the exciting part. Route 59 climbs from 100 meters to 1,500 meters through dense jungle, past Orang Asli villages, and around hundreds of switchbacks. The road is two lanes, well-paved, but narrow in places. Drive slowly, especially in fog. You'll pass Ringlet (the first town), then Tanah Rata, and finally Brinchang at the top.

What to Do in Cameron Highlands#

The cool mountain air alone is worth the drive, but there's plenty to fill a day or two. Here's what I always recommend.

BOH Tea Plantation

Malaysia's most famous tea brand. The Sungai Palas estate has a visitor center with free tours and a cafe perched on a hillside overlooking endless rows of tea bushes. Order a pot of BOH's Cameron Gold and a slice of tea-infused cake. Free entry.

Mossy Forest

An otherworldly cloud forest at 2,000 meters, draped in moss and pitcher plants. A boardwalk trail takes about 30-45 minutes. Go early morning before the clouds roll in. Best with a guide (RM 50-80 per person) who can point out the rare flora, but self-guided is fine too.

Strawberry Farms

Pick-your-own strawberry farms are everywhere. The berries are smaller and more tart than imported ones, but there's something satisfying about eating them straight off the vine. Raaju's Hill near Brinchang is one of the better farms. RM 30-50 per basket.

Brinchang Night Market

Every Friday and Saturday night, Brinchang's main road transforms into a pasar malam. Grilled corn, strawberry-everything, Orang Asli honey, and fresh vegetables at highland prices. Bring a jacket — it drops to 15-18°C after dark. The steamboat restaurants nearby are perfect for a chilly evening.

Butterfly Garden & Lavender Farm

The Butterfly Garden in Brinchang is small but well-kept, with hundreds of free-flying butterflies and an insect exhibit. Nearby, the Cameron Lavender Garden has decent photo spots with lavender rows and mountain backdrops. Both are RM 10-15 entry. Good for families or a quick 30-minute stop between the main attractions.

Day Trip vs Overnight#

Day Trip: Not Feasible

Not recommended

With 4 hours of driving each way (or 5 hours by bus), a day trip to Cameron Highlands from Penang leaves you with almost no time at the destination. I tried it once and spent more time in the car than out of it. Don't make my mistake.

Minimum 1 Night (2 Recommended)

Recommended

One night lets you arrive in the afternoon, explore the next morning, and drive back after lunch. Two nights is ideal — you can visit BOH, the Mossy Forest, a strawberry farm, and still have time for steamboat dinner and the night market. Hotels in Tanah Rata run RM 80-200/night. The Heritage Hotel and Cameron Highlands Resort are worth a splurge.
