Penang Itineraries 2026: 1 to 4 Day Plans by a Local

Pick the right Penang itinerary for your trip length. Each plan is built from personal experience — not scraped from TripAdvisor.

I built these itineraries over 12 years of living in George Town and walking every route with visiting friends. Each one has been tested multiple times, refined after feedback, and updated when stalls close or new spots open. They are not theoretical — I have personally eaten at every hawker centre, climbed every temple staircase, and timed every Grab ride in these plans.

How to Choose

If you only have one day, you'll get the concentrated essence of George Town — street art, Khoo Kongsi, the Clan Jetties, and world-class hawker food. Two days adds the hilltop circuit: Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang Hill, and the Peranakan Mansion. Three days is the sweet spot for first-timers, giving you time to go deeper into the food scene and explore beyond the UNESCO core without rushing. Four days is for people who want the complete experience — beaches at Batu Ferringhi, the Tropical Spice Garden, Balik Pulau's durian farms, and enough breathing room to revisit a favourite hawker stall or spend an afternoon in a heritage cafe doing nothing at all.

Common Questions#

How many days do I need in Penang?

For first-timers, 3 days is ideal. You'll cover George Town heritage, Kek Lok Si, Penang Hill, and plenty of food. Add a 4th day for beaches or deeper exploration.

Can I do Penang as a day trip from KL?

Yes, but it's rushed. Better to spend at least one night. The flight is 1 hour, or 4 hours by car. Our 1-day itinerary maximizes a quick visit.

What's the best base in Penang?

Stay in George Town's UNESCO zone (Armenian Street, Love Lane, Chulia Street area). You'll be walking distance from most attractions and hawker food.
